![]() ![]() I’ll certainly be taking these ideas back with me to Jersey, as we continue to develop initiatives such as the Connect Me Community Compass scheme and the International Cultural Centre, alongside the development of broader community engagement in library services. ![]() ![]() Kim laid out a similar criteria for belonging, it being found in our relationships with other people, our relationship with nature, our ability to influence political and economic decision-making, and our ability to find meaning and purpose in our lives. Helen concluded her presentation with a comment that we all have three ‘life support systems’ our bodies, our social infrastructure and the environment. Helen Czerski gave a compelling insight into the systems that drive the world’s oceans, while Kim Samuel discussed the importance of social connections and our inherent need for a sense of belonging.ĭespite their differing subject matter I was really struck by how both authors drew very similar conclusions, that the fundamental issue is how we relate to our environment and those around us.
